The Peace Candle

Today is the second week of Advent and tonight the second purple candle will be lit.  This candle represents the Peace Candle or it’s sometimes called The Bethlehem Candle.  This candle represents the divine love that God has for us, he sent his son to light the way and bring peace to earth.  God kept his promise that our Savior would be born in Bethlehem.   In the Old Testament, God gave his people clues about where and how Jesus would enter the world.  He would be a Ruler full of peace and born in Bethlehem, he would be a Son of a virgin, He would be from the line of David and rescue all from sin.

Micah 5:2

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,    though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me,  one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

His entrance could have been very different.  He could’ve entered into a palace fit for a King.  He could’ve had royal bedding and royal clothing.  Servants waiting to make sure all was as it should be for the new born King, but it didn’t happen that way.  On a quiet night our Savior entered the world, in a manger, with smelly animals surrounding him, no comfy clothing, no servants..he came to Mary and Joseph… strips of old cloth keeping him warm as he lay on a bed of straw, he came…in a humble way.  That amazes me!  Jesus, the King of Heaven departed from His home in glory, to come to earth with one mission, to be the way that we could be reunited with God, to save the lost.  The events are recorded and these events changed the world forever.

Luke 2:3-7

And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

So tonight light the second purple candle in awe and wonder of the incredible arrival of our Savior.  God keeps His promises, Jesus came and he came to save sinners! He is the way, the Truth and the Light!  Glory to God in the Highest… in wonder of His birth!
